"etymology_text": "Compound of budaya (“culture”) + kuning (“yellow”). The \"kuning\" (yellow) part was a Calque of Chinese 黃色文化 /黄色文化 (“yellow culture”), a term used by the Communist Chinese government to condemn Western-style entertainment. The term \"yellow\" 黃色 /黄色 (huángsè) was a colloquial term for erotic-themed works, such as in 1920s Shanghai, ultimately from English yellow journalism for the sensational nature of those erotic works.\nIn the 1950s, Singapore and Malaya (now Malaysia) faced social anxieties about a postwar spike in crime, fuelled by the collapse of Japanese colonial rule, Communist militant attacks, and widespread poverty. This prompted the Singaporean government to ban certain forms of entertainment as \"yellow culture\". Malaysia followed suit in the 1970s with the popularity of rock n' roll music being associated with hippies, drugs, and alcohol.",
